The GroundUp project’s event, “EU Citizenship and the Rights of EU Mobile Citizens,” held from October 1–4, 2024, in Galatas, Municipality of Troizinia-Methana, showcased the importance of rural youth participation in EU democratic processes. Organized by the Local Action Group (LAG) of Attica Islands, the event brought together project partners, policymakers, educators, and over 100 local students.
The agenda featured discussions on EU citizenship, identity, and misinformation, highlighting youth empowerment and cross-cultural collaboration. Students from local schools presented their insights, participating alongside experts and representatives from 13 EU member states. Key sessions included an Oxford Debate on identity and hate speech and reflections on the democratic deficit in rural areas.
Tailored to meet the needs of young participants, the event fostered dialogue between local and international stakeholders. It emphasized the role of education and civic engagement in addressing misinformation and stereotypes while promoting mutual understanding and peaceful relations. By empowering youth as change-makers, the event underscored the potential of rural communities to contribute to a more inclusive and democratic Europe.
