ILA Promotes Safety and Health for Decent Work in the Mining Industry
ILA promotes safety and health for decent work in the mining industry.
The mining industry is a major contributor to many developing economies. However, it is among the most hazardous industrial sectors, which still cause a high level of severe work accidents, including fatal cases and occupational respiratory diseases. For instance, in May 2014, 301 miners died in an explosion at the Soma coal mine in Western Turkey. There is an urgent need to secure the mine work safety, and the current situation requires special and priority attention.
ILA has started to develop a project to reduce work accidents and occupational diseases in the mining industry through the use of modern OSH policies supported by the enhanced capacity of partners. The project aims to achieve this objective by studying modern OSH policies in accordance with the international labour standards and EU directives, strengthening the capacity of partners to use practical OSH management measures at the workplace level, and promoting safety and preventative culture through effective knowledge-sharing on tools and good practice on OSH.
