The GroundUp project’s event, “Free Travel, Living, Working: The Maastricht Treaty – GroundUp on the Rights of EU Citizens,” took place online on December 5, 2024, and January 17, 2025, gathering 140 participants from 19 countries. Organized by Sdružení SPLAV, z.s., the event combined webinars and panel discussions to explore EU citizens’ rights and the role of diversity, inclusion, and education in strengthening European identity and participation.
Through sessions on free movement, diversity management in local communities, and the European Citizens’ Initiative, the event offered valuable insights into how EU policies shape its citizens’ daily lives and rights. Highlights included an Oxford Debate on the adequacy of the Maastricht Treaty and the introduction of best practices from municipalities across Europe.
Designed for youth workers, educators, and civic actors, the event promoted critical thinking, equity, and citizen engagement as key pillars for a more inclusive Europe. It reinforced the importance of grassroots initiatives in shaping democratic participation and human rights implementation in both urban and rural settings.
